As you may have read on my blog last week, I’ve recently taken the plunge into trying dehydrated pet food. Since I’ve been on a rotational diet since I was just a wee pup I’m always excited when mom finds a few food for me to try. This time around I got to try the Revel Chicken Recipe from my friends at The Honest Kitchen!
If you’re unfamiliar with de-hydrated dog food, it is essentially raw foods that have been dehydrated to lock in the nutrients. It’s less processed than dry food, and typically needs water to “plump up”.
The Honest Kitchen’s dehydrated pet food, treats and supplements are made from 100% human grade whole foods.
The Honest Kitchen makes several varieties of pet food including grain free, whole grain, and even limited ingredient foods for sensitive pets, or pets with allergies.
Revel is the food I started out with, and had been eating over the past few weeks. It’s a whole grain chicken food with Free-range chicken, organic barley, potatoes, organic flax, organic oats, green peas, carrots, bananas, parsley, organic kelp, celery, tricalcium phosphate, choline chloride, zinc amino acid chelate, vitamin D3 supplement, vitamin E supplement, potassium iodide, potassium chloride, iron amino acid chelate, copper amino acid chelate, thiamine mononitrate.
A 2 lb. box of Revel costs $15.99, and if you consider that I eat 1/3 cup twice a day, a 2lb. box (which contains about 8 cups of food) would end up costing me $1.33 a day and would last me 12 days (and there is even bigger savings when you buy larger quantities).
Now let me just say, I’ve never been much of a morning dog, but ever since Revel showed up at my door I’ve been an early riser because I just cannot wait to get my breakfast! No joke, I’m the first one out of bed now ready and waiting to be served my Honest Kitchen meal.
I’ve been eating about 1/3 cup twice a day for the past several weeks – and loving every minute of it.
The hardest part about eating dehydrated is having to wait that agonizing 3 minutes while it “puffs up” after mom adds hot water. I have to say though, after about a month I’m starting to get a bit more patient for my meals now, and mom likes how it’s teaching me to have more self control (as if dachshunds have any of that!).
The aroma of chicken noodle soup (which is what mom says it smells like) fills my house at mealtime, and I scarf that puppy down! After a month of eating dehydrated food from The Honest Kitchen mom even noticed that my coat seemed shinier and softer too.

I’m always looking to feed my dachshund healthy food and treats. This is something i would definitely try. That’s for sharing, Ammo.
I recently changed to Merrick food for Cocoa & Emmy. I would like to try the Honest Kitchen. Cocoa is very picky about her food, and Emmy likes everthing!
I would guess picky eaters would probably love it (I’m not a picky eater) but once I tried the honest kitchen I started pestering mom at mealtime (something I’ve never done) because I could hardly wait to eat!
I just ordered the sample pack, going to try it. Thanks Ammo!
My dachshund loves Honest Kitchen!
Aw I get woken up almost every morning but the dry food bowl is always full, she just likes to be petted while she eats. ?
I normally don’t feed my pup in the morning, as I only feed her once a day at night. And Poppy is always waiting!
He wakes up early, but he stays in his bed and gives me The Look until I feed him, which of course is the first thing I do after making the bed. 😛 😉
Mini loved a different brand of dehydrated food we got a sample of, I’m sure she would love The Honest Kitchen too!
Vienna is 15 and a typical dachshund who is always hungry and whines if her meal is late. Griffin is about 18 months and is picky about food, sometimes just walks away after a bite or two. I’m on the hunt to find something he actually enjoys eating. He is the first dachshund out of 7 that I’ve had to encourage to eat!
Hiya Ammo!!! Misty and Rio like to lounge around in bed with me in the mornings. We’re late risers. They always have dry food in their bowls, but always look forward to trying new things. Will have to see if they like this. Thanks so much for having the giveaway. Blessed be, hugs!!! Pam, Misty and Rio

Blue Buffalo has been our food of choice, but it’d be interesting to try dehydrated food…!
Yes, my dog’s hunger doesn’t have an off switch. She could eat all the time.
Shyla isn’t much of a morning dog 🙂 She sleeps in and doesn’t like to eat before noon.
can kitty fans of Ammo get in on the action too? 🙂
you bet!
He likes it that powdery? I was thinking of getting that but I wasn’t sure how that would go over 😉
You’re supposed to re-hydrate it before feeding. 🙂
Exactly right Maggie Berry, you add water to it to get it to “puff up”.
Awww…so it’s basically a wet dog food. Makes more sense now…not sure why a dog would want to eat powder ?
My doxie is diabetic. Do you think this is a good food for her? She has a built-in alarm clock! She wakes up every single day at the same time and is ready for a potty trip and then her breakfast.
While I don’t know much about diabetic dog diets myself, I did find this super helpful article from the Honest kitchen with recommended products they carry for just this type of issue: http://www.thehonestkitchen.com/articles/diabetes-in-dogs-and-cats/ Hope that helps!
My dachshund is so allergic to everything and has such a sensitive stomach. i am always looking for better products and healthy food to try.

Ammo, tell your momma that she needs to get up earlier. There is far too much sunlight in these pictures for it to be breakfast time!
Both of my dogs are ready for breakfast in the morning. One of our dogs, Artie bounces down the hall to the food bowl.
My dog is ALWAYS ready for a meal — no matter what time of day it is!
