How I Became Ammo

With a name like Ammo I always get questions about how I ended up with such an explosive name (for such a small dog). So I figured it was high time I shared the story of how I got my name.

A is for Ammo // Ammo the Dachshund Super Hero

I like to think I’ve really grown into my name over the past 6 years that I’ve had it, but my parents thought long and hard before they landed on “Ammo”.

In fact, it might help to show you a video of the VERY FIRST time I ever met my parents.

As you can see I really wasn’t too shy about asserting my personality! 😉

After meeting me, falling in love, and deciding I would get my forever home with them, mom and dad went home to contemplate what my new name would be.

How Ammo Got His Name - Trooper and Ranger - Puppy

Mom had picked out the name Ranger. She thought it was a strong name that sounded super cute with my soon to be best buddy’s name….Trooper! (Mom still says Trooper & Ranger would have been cute names).

How Ammo the Dachshund got his name

Dad picked out the name Ammo. He said I looked like a little bullet because I was so long.

How Ammo the Dachshund got his name - And the name that almost was, Robot!

The wildcard name that almost came to be….Robot! Hehe, I like to think that would have been a pretty funny name to have too.

In the end I became Ammo. Mostly because my dad had never had a dog before (mom had) and it seemed only fitting that he get to name his very first fur kid (at least according to mom). So Ammo it was! And you know what, I think it’s pretty fitting. I’m fast, powerful, and explosive. I even found out later on (via a Facebook fan) that Amo means love in Italian. How cool!

Even though my name is Ammo, I’ve got lots of little nicknames around the house that mom and dad like to call me:

Amee
Am
Amer
L’Amee (short for Little Amee)
Ween
Weenie
Monkey
Peanut
Miami (short for My Amee)

How did your dog get their name? Does he/she have any fun nicknames too? Do tell! Ammo the Dachshund // Blog Signature // Celebrity

  1. My little darling Mini Doxie is named Abbi. She’s a red-smooth just like you, Ammo. She is also 6 years old as of May 21st. I call her Abs or sweetpea. Every morning before I leave to go to work, she has to have her belly rubbed. The funniest thing she does is on the weekend when I sometimes sleep in, she will decide to wake me by using her nose to lift my head up and crawl underneath my head to make sure I stay up. LOL It always makes me smile when she does that, and you can’t beat waking up with a smile on your face.

  2. I think your name is perfect for you Ammo! You were such a cutie pup and still are. I bet your mom can’t believe that you are six already. Time goes too fast!

  3. Ammo, I loved seeing your list of nicknames; it made me think of all the nicknames we had for our Melanie who was a Black and Tan smooth mini. We adopted her when we lived in Tokyo and she came with the name Melanie and the familiar Melanie-chan and Mela-chan. We soon added Puppy, Doberdachs, Thunderpaws, and Little Miss Barker.
I think your name fits you well.

  4. Ammo. … Your name is totally perfect for you you are strong fast and a very high energy dog.

I think our family has a very funny story when it comes to our names…

When Mom started our little dachshund family back in 1994 she started off with my big brother Hans and he was a black and tan and totally gorgeous. When Mom went to register him with AKC they told her she could not name him Hans because another male black and tan was born on the same day and was named Hans. Obviously mom was a little upset and went to the park with Hans too think. In the park someone asked if he was a hot dog dog and mom said no he’s a hamburger… And low and behold the burger bloodline was started. My family consists of Hansburger, Chiliburger, Cocoburger, Baileyburger, Hersheyburger, Candieburger Baronburger and of course last but not least me Mr Lennyburger!..lol I even had a basset hound sister that was named Daisy Mae (Da Mayor ….lol…and mayor on German is the burgermeister….so she was a burger too!)
We have lots of nicknames…Nugget..the bird…flying nun…H’er..Hansie…Chillbird…little buddy…babycakes…lol…you name it she has called us it…just don’t call me late for dinner 😉
    Mr Lennyburger; )

  5. My dachshund’s name is Heidi. What else do you name a cute little female German dog?

  6. Heidi’s nicknames are:pretty girl, the girl, baby, pia (pain in the ass), Weiners doodle, Weiner schnitzel, sweetie pie, mommy’ s sweet one, daddy’s girl. And my fav- you are my sunshine.

  7. Weird! Ammo, I was just wondering about two days ago how you got your name! I loved hearing all the names you almost got named. And I think it was super sweet of your mom to let you dad name you! I think Ammo is a pretty cool name, and I think it does fit you. At least from what I can tell from the blog. 😀 (I love the picture of you with the bullet drawing alongside…perfect illustration!)

We actually didn’t name my dog, because he started out being a Guide Dog in training, and although we could have changed it when he failed and we adopted him, he was that name, and vice versa, so we kept it. He has several nicknames, though. Buddy, buddy-boy, Mister, Mister-man, Mister-hood, and probably lots more that I’m forgetting! Buddy is probably what I call him the most when I don’t use his name. 😀

  10. Ammo, the day before you posted this, I was sitting outside with Mini on my lap, thinking of all the nicknames she has earned over time. So far her nicknames are: Mini-min, Mini-moo, Moo-moo, Moomie (moo-me), Cutie, Cutesie (cute-see), Cutsie (cut-see) and Cutie-Q. I know some of them might sound a bit weird, but those are Mini’s nicknames and she loves them when she hears them.
I also call her “little sausage doggie” (she’s a mini dachshund).

  11. You name nearly means love in italian AND in spanish, “amore” in italian, “amor” in spanish. In spanish “Amo” means master or boss. By the way my name is Molly Malone and I am a kerry blue terrier from Ireland living in Spain.

  12. I always wondered but it seems to be perfect for you. My corgi/doxie is named Dexter (from his first owner) but I call him my snausage because he is long and a bit chubby like a sausage

  13. My Roxton got his name “Lord John Roxton ” from the character on the TV show Lost World. He was a big-time Hunter extraordinaire. I had big hopes for rocks and being a hunter. So far the only thing he can hunt down is food.

  14. Winston is named after Winston Churchill (big guy, little dog) and has very similar nicknames to yours, also including Little Bug and Monster. His late brother, Sawyer, was named after the character on “Lost” because he was the bad boy! He was also a fantastic boy and we miss him every day….he was my Big Man (brawnier and more extroverted than Winston). Thanks for sharing your name origin, Ammo! It fits you so well! ❤️

  15. I have 5 Jack Russells, Captain Jack (Jack) & Miss Elizabeth (Lizzie) after Pirates of the Caribbean characters. Miss Jessica (Jessi) & Sadie Rose (we call her Sadie, the Rose is after her momma Piper Rose) both after Duck Dynasty characters. And then there’s our Willy! His daddy’s name is Gunslinger (gunner) so I wanted something uniquely western so I named him Willy the Kid (after the infamous gunfighter/outlaw Billy the Kid.) Sometimes we call him Willus, Williford, Willy the boy,and Silly Willy. He has such a magnificent personality that I started a blog for him. I’m just learning the blogging world, its fun! I love the name Ammo so much I am going to name one of Willy’s sons Ammo, if that’s okay?

  16. My cocker spaniels name is Joe Cocker he gets by with a little help from his friends! When he was a year old he was bite by a rattle snack we had to save his life!

  17. We wanted a German name for our red mini. We chose Karl, inspired by Karl’s Sausage House and European Market in Peabody, MA
