It seems you all love to make fun things for your dogs and teach them tricks! (Who doesn’t?)
And to those of you that left me comments daily (shoutout to JB, Donna, Pam B, and Rebecca) either on my blog or my Facebook Page, THANK YOU! While I don’t always respond to every comment, know that I do read them! They bring a smile to my face everyday and it makes me happy that so many of your out there are enjoying my adventures!
While I never quite know what the year ahead holds for me, I do know that it certainly will never be dull around here.
With each passing year I do like to re-evaluate my blogging adventure. While I love sharing my life with each and every one of you, keeping up with my blog and social media accounts can be a full time job. The truth is, it’s a hobby that I enjoy, but I have to be realistic in how thin I spread myself between my full time job working at mom’s shop, taking care of my ponies, and making sure I have time for all my fun adventures with my friends and family.
So moving on to 2016, I’ve decided to make a few changes to perhaps lighten my work load just a bit. The first change is that sadly I will be closing up my Flying Hero Etsy Shop as soon as I sell out of all items. While I’ve loved sharing fun dachshund artwork, greeting cards, and handmade items with all of you, it’s just become difficult for my manager (aka mom) to handle keeping up with all of it. (did you know we actually have 3 etsy shops – Studio 3, Painting Pony + Flying Hero, plus a Brick & Mortar store)
So the good news for you is that lots of items are now on SALE! Quantities are limited though, and once they are gone…they will be GONE!
The next change for 2016 will be my blogging schedule. I’ve decided to try a slightly different posting schedule of Monday, Wednesday, and Friday with occasionally some additional posts during the week as my time warrants.
While I know some of you may be sad to not read my adventures during the week quite as often, my hope is that this will allow me to have even bigger adventure posts to share with you each week!
Taking pictures, editing them, and having time for actual adventures is a big job in itself. So by posting 3 times a week I’ll have a little more time to create even better content for all of you to read!
So if you’re a bit sad you might not be hearing from me quite as often, don’t worry, I’ll still be sharing snapshots of my life daily on Instagram and Facebook.
So buckle up, and join me for the ride that is 2016! I can hardly wait!
When the new FURminator Comfort Edge DeShedding Tool arrived at my door a few weeks ago, I knew just who would be getting a major grooming, my buddy Trooper!
I have to admit, I’m a wee bit jealous of all of Trooper’s glorious hair (he claims he gets his good hair from his mom, the Australian Shepherd). I on the other hand am plagued with Dachshund pattern baldness (it’s a real thing, look it up!), and have to wear coats and sweaters all winter long to keep warm on the farm.
Thanks to our new FURminator mom collected enough Trooper hair to make me a sweater from it! Now who’s good with a loom?
You can check out more great grooming products for pets from FURminator!
We’re about to embark on one of my favorite months of the year, October! Not only do I turn 7 years old this month, but it’s also the month of all things spooky! I can hardly wait.
But before we dive right into October, I always like to look back at all the fun I had the previous month. First though, let me give a shoutout to my special sponsors & affiliates! Thanks to them I’m able to bring you exciting posts, so make sure you give them some love and check out what great products they carry!
Barkbox is a monthly subscription service for your dog. Starting as low as $19 a month (shipping included) you can get a box of the finest treats and toys sent right to your front door every month! Choose from packages for small, medium, and large dogs and as a bonus 10% of their sales go to supporting rescue groups! You can check out just what goodies your dog could be getting every month by reading my reviews!
Ruffwear carries performance dog gear designed to enhance and inspire outdoor adventures for dogs and their human companions. Totally my kind of company that carries anything from dog hiking packs, harnesses, camping essentials and more! You can check out my review of their dog boots (that even work for dachshund’s too) as well as the Ruffwear Swamp Cooler to keep your pup cool in the summer and one of my favorites, the Ruffwear Front Range Harness!
If you would like to find out more about advertising with me, visit my advertising page. And thanks again to all of my wonderful sponsors, I couldn’t do it without you!
And that brings us to October! I can’t wait until next week, because it’s my Birthday Week! You won’t want to miss it, because not only do I celebrate all week long, but I’ve got some fun prizes to giveaway to you too! Don’t miss it!
Disclaimer: This post is brought to you by The Honest Kitchen. All opinions are my own and I only share products I think you will love.
Soap. I have a love/hate relationship with it. As in when I smell like soap (instead of my preferred odor of stink) my mom wants to snuggle with me more, strangers stroke my glorious fur, and I can coax a cookie out of the ups man that much easier.
So when my new friends at The Honest Kitchen sent me one of their new Sparkle Bars to try, I figured why not give it whirl.
Joining me on my bath time excursion was Mr. Crab. He somehow avoided the whole being lathered up in soap thing. I must remember to ask him later what the secret is!
I tolerate bath time quite well. I’ve even figured out that if I use my sad puppy dog eyes then I’m more likely to get a whole bunch of cookies in the process. It’s the little things.
Mom applied the Sparkle Bar directly to my furs. I hear that these bars are hand-made from a base of organic goat’s milk from a family farm (holla to my farming friends) in the Deep South, and blended with olive and coconut oil plus precious, functional herbs and botanicals that gently nourish the different needs of the skin and coat. All I know is it got me S O A P Y.
The Honest Kitchen sells several different kinds of the Sparkle Bars, but I got to test the Lavender, Cedar, Juniper & Rosemary Sparkle Bar. It is their most aromatic shampoo bar, and I could even smell it through the packaging when it arrived!
I was surprised to see how sudsy the bar was able to get me, even with just a few passes, one bar should last for about 18 baths for a 30lb dog.
Until recently I hadn’t really ever used bar soap to take a bath. Most of the time I had used liquid shampoo (as probably the general dog population does), but did you know that old-fashioned liquid shampoos create a larger carbon footprint, because they are bulky and heavy to ship. Regular shampoo also requires loads of plastic packaging, which usually means reliance on fossil fuels and questionable recyclability after use, not to mention the risk of leaks and spills from a broken bottle! After learning how liquid shampoos are not as good for the environment I was more than happy to grab a bar instead!
In contrast, Sparkle Shampoo Bars are like ‘dehydrated’ shampoo – compact, free of wasteful “water weight”, efficient to ship and minimal on the packaging front too. Which comes in handy when all you have are paws and a set of chompers to open the box with!
The best part is, they smell super good (according to human noses at least), but I’m still waiting for The Honest Kitchen to come out with a “Rabbit Poop Scented Sparkle Bar”. I know lots of dog friends that would pay good money for that!
After my bath (ok, it was 2 baths over the course of a week…I had a lot of stink to roll in) I was smelling oh-so-fresh.
Of course I didn’t think it was right to hog all of that wonderful smelling Sparkle Bar all to myself, so I decided to share…
You’re welcome mom, because the carpet never smelled better! Sparkle Dachshund to the rescue.
If you’d like to help your dog Sparkle too, you can fetch the Sparkle Shampoo Bars from The Honest Kitchen for $12.99 (that’s 72 cents per bath ….since a bar lasts about 18 baths, even more for us small dogs!)
P.S. Coming up in a few weeks I’ll be sharing a review (+giveaway) of some of the excellent dehydrated food available from The Honest Kitchen. But if you’d like to get a jump on testing it yourself, you can use my special code to get a FREE SAMPLE BUNDLE! Grab a FREE SAMPLE BUNDLE + Coupon (A $10 Value) for $1 shipping with code AMBBGKD6100 from the Honest Kitchen!
Sometimes when you’re a dog you just feel like you’re not being heard. Maybe it’s because humans and dogs don’t always speak the same language, and maybe it’s because they just CHOOSE not to listen to what we’re saying. Regardless, every once in a while I need to make a little noise about it….
So next time your dog “yells” at you, you better pay attention, because we have LOTS TO SAY!
Does your dog bark/yell at you too? What do you think he’s trying to say?
With a name like Ammo I always get questions about how I ended up with such an explosive name (for such a small dog). So I figured it was high time I shared the story of how I got my name.
I like to think I’ve really grown into my name over the past 6 years that I’ve had it, but my parents thought long and hard before they landed on “Ammo”.
In fact, it might help to show you a video of the VERY FIRST time I ever met my parents.
As you can see I really wasn’t too shy about asserting my personality! 😉
After meeting me, falling in love, and deciding I would get my forever home with them, mom and dad went home to contemplate what my new name would be.
Mom had picked out the name Ranger. She thought it was a strong name that sounded super cute with my soon to be best buddy’s name….Trooper! (Mom still says Trooper & Ranger would have been cute names).
Dad picked out the name Ammo. He said I looked like a little bullet because I was so long.
The wildcard name that almost came to be….Robot! Hehe, I like to think that would have been a pretty funny name to have too.
In the end I became Ammo. Mostly because my dad had never had a dog before (mom had) and it seemed only fitting that he get to name his very first fur kid (at least according to mom). So Ammo it was! And you know what, I think it’s pretty fitting. I’m fast, powerful, and explosive. I even found out later on (via a Facebook fan) that Amo means love in Italian. How cool!
Even though my name is Ammo, I’ve got lots of little nicknames around the house that mom and dad like to call me:
Amee
Am
Amer
L’Amee (short for Little Amee)
Ween
Weenie
Monkey
Peanut
Miami (short for My Amee)
How did your dog get their name? Does he/she have any fun nicknames too? Do tell!
If you’re unfamiliar with BlogPaws, it’s essentially a community of pet enthusiasts who write about and support pets via social media! Their annual conferences bring together hundreds of pet bloggers, pet enthusiasts, shelters, rescues, and brands for social media education, networking, and promoting.
I’m pretty much a newbie when it comes to BlogPaws, and I decided to attend this annual event for the first time after I found out I was a finalist for the Best Dog Blog and Best Pet Photo of 2015 in the Nose-to-Nose Awards.
Honestly I had no idea what to expect at this conference, and pretty much all I knew was that it was a pet friendly event, which meant I would be doing a whole lot of butt sniffing!
At first I was a little nervous when I entered the conference. There was a lot going on, tons of dogs, lots of chatter, and so so much to look at. But after about an hour I quickly realized this was a safe place to be and I was with MY KIND OF DOGS. (friendly, adventurous, and ready to sample lots and lots of treats).
To give you a little better idea of what a BlogPaws conference actually looks like, check out this video:
At 15 seconds in you can actually see me and my mom & dad walking around the BlogPaws vender area (bottom right corner).
The BlogPaws vender area was packed with brands that are interested in working with bloggers, and that’s good news for you, because it means I’ll hopefully be able to bring you even more fun product reviews & giveaways with some great new products in the coming months! Which P.S., if you’re ever interested in hearing my honest review about a product or brand or you’d love me to host a giveaway with them (so you could potentially win!) – just shoot them (or me) an e-mail and let them know about my blog!
I had a blast sampling products, and talking to companies about some of their new product lines.
While I’ve been to expos before, this was the liveliest one, and I couldn’t believe how much there was to see and do! And did I mention the swag? There were so many wonderful sponsors that donated products to the event, and I gotta send my thanks to them (because this was only a small potion of it)! And since I’m just one small dog, I will be donating many items to my local animal rescue!
One of the exciting things was getting the opportunity to attend some of the lectures and talks at BlogPaws. I have to say before this, I had never attended a lecture before, unless you count the times I visited an Elementary School.
While mom and dad were busy learning about SEO, monetization, pinterest marketing, and so much more, I was busy catching some Zzzz’s! Because honestly, all of it was a bit over my head. I’m much more the “talent” behind this blog anyway, and I was more than thrilled that mom and dad were there to take notes for me. Mom found some of the lectures very interesting and picked up some new skills she’ll be helping me apply to not only my blog, but my regular 9-5 business at the frame shop.
While the lectures were quite serious in nature, I made sure to liven them up some with a few of my silly tricks…..like playing dead! (It’s no fun to be serious all the time!)
Guess what, I wasn’t the only Dachshund with the silly’s there either! This is Fiona McSnuggles, a long haired sweetie who was actually blind and is a therapy dog just like me.
I also met Dolly the Doxie, a dachshund mix! Surprisingly (or maybe not so much) those were the only other dachshunds I spotted at BlogPaws.
I did however get to meet the infamous Prissy and Pop! They are celebrities on instagram, and even have jobs working as mascots in a first grade class. And yes, I’m super jealous that they are on summer break right now!
With all the excitement of the BlogPaws conference I made sure to take as many nap breaks as I could squeeze in, especially since my poor mom caught a nasty cold the day we left for our road trip adventure and spent most of the week trying her best to get through all the fun activities we had planned.
Speaking of fun, I became the recipient of my very own Busy Bee while at BlogPaws! If you’ve ever watched the movie Best in Show, then you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about when I say I was FREAKING OUT every time my Busy Bee from PetSafe (one of the sponsors of BlogPaws) got out of my sight! And if you haven’t watch the movie…do it….do it now!
After all the excitement of the week there was one last thing to do….attend the 2015 Nose-to-Nose awards! Of course I dressed to the nines since I was a finalist for Best Dog Blog and Best Pet Photo awards!
This was my first time walking a red carpet, and hopefully I worked it!
Here’s a group shot of most of the 2015 Nose-to-Nose Finalists. In case you didn’t get a chance to catch the live streaming event, you can watch the video here:
Sadly I did not take home any awards this year, but hey, I’m just honored to have been a finalist – my very first year too!
You know who did win though? My fellow dachshund adventurer blog, You Did What With Your Wiener? Congrats to Jessica, and I’m thrilled that dachshund adventure seekers are taking over the World! (well at least BlogPaws).
After 3 days of BlogPaws I was royally beat! I had so much fun, and hopefully I’ll get to attend again sometime soon (I’m thinking it may be an every few years event for me).
For now though it was time to make my trek back home to Pennsylvania where my ponies were anxiously awaiting my return!
And don’t worry, incase you were thinking this was the end of my adventures, I still have one more fun stop I made on the way home in Knoxville, Tennessee! Check back next week for the full details on my visit to the Sunsphere.
P.S. Don’t forget, for you local Pennsylvanians, I’ll be at the Ryerss Family Fun Day this Saturday from 12 – 4pm with my friend Minnow the famous Painting Pony. Hope you’ll stop by and meet me! I’ll be performing some of my favorite tricks too!
Thanks to one of my readers I was introduced to the Purple Bone. They carry lots of fun and modern products for dogs, but I was particularly drawn to their fun mix of toys. And don’t worry, even though they are based in the UK, they do ship worldwide.
You can fetch these products and more from Purple Bone.
Disclosure: This is NOT a sponsored post, nor do I own any of these products. Just wanted to share the latest thing I’m digging!
I like to think that I’m a pretty stylish dog. I love to shop, and over the years I’ve tested and tried some of the best dog products on the market. I like to think that you (my readers) agree, because one of the common questions I get in e-mails, blog comments, and social media is where did I get a particular product I am seen wearing.
So I decided to create a whole new page on my blog dedicated to all the gear that I own, have tested, and absolutely love!
So I invite you to check out my new Gear page, where I’ve compiled a list of all the gear I own and where you can grab it for your own dog too. From pet food, to winter wear, and even the photography gear my mom uses to take the photos for my blog!
So head on over and check it out, and if you’re wondering about something on the list, just shoot me an e-mail at info@ammothedachshund.com! With such an extensive list, it’s entirely possible I forgot to list something!
Happy Shopping!
P.S. If you have any special pet gear that you love too be sure to post it in the comments below, I love to hear what other pets and pet lovers are digging!
I’m now about a week into 2015, and just like years past I like to come up with a few resolutions for the new year. Last year I came up with a list of several goals I wanted like to accomplish. Lets see how I did…
2014 Goals:
Relax more, and don’t work so hard!
I always struggle with this one as I take on a lot of roles, shop dog, farm dog, guard dog at home. But I tried to relax some!
Go on more walks around my neighborhood
I’m happy to report in the summer especially I tried to go on at least 1 walk a week through my neighborhood, I also went hiking a lot more too!
Compete in a Barn Hunt Competition I would still love to make it to a barn hunt competition some day, sadly 2014 just wasn’t the year!
Take a new training class
While I didn’t attend any new training classes I did continue on with my dog agility training for most of the year.
For 2015 I decided to do something a little different. Instead of a whole list of goals I would like to accomplish I have come up with just one resolution.
My resolution for this year is to take more time to be with my family, enjoy as many adventures as possible, and learn to unplug a bit. As you know I lead quite the busy life for a dog. Not only do I work everyday in my mom’s shop as the official greeter, but I also have duties on the farm, as well as guard dog duties at home – and lets not forget my love of adventure! And while I started this blog because I wanted to share my fun adventures with you, sometimes I struggle to have a balance of adventure time and “blogging” time.
So while I have no plans to stop sharing my happy adventures with you (it’s what keeps my tail wagging everyday!), I have decided that starting next week I will be blogging 4 days a week instead of 5. (Tuesday through Friday).
But don’t worry, if you find yourself missing your monday dose of me – you can always catch adorable photos of me daily on my Facebook page and instagram account.
I’m looking forward to 2015 and all it has to bring, and I’m hoping to have even more excitement and adventures to share with you in the months to come! xoxo,
