Ode to My Mailman
I wonder what it’s like to be a mailman,
To carry all that mail.
I bet I’d look sweet in that uniform,
Even with my furry tail.
I probably wouldn’t want to go outside in bad weather,
So I might not be so great at delivering a letter.
And I’d much rather wait for the mail anyway,
Because my mailman does it so much better!
After all, he always remembers to deliver me a sweet treat! Thanks for all the mail Mr. Mailman!

Back in September I went on a very important adventure with my sister that I forgot to share. How could I forget? We went to Petco!
It’s arguably one of the most important trips in a young baby’s life. I mean how else is she going to know where to shop for me?
While I was there I even got to pick out a FREE pound of cookies thanks to the Birthday club. I never say no to cookies. And lucky for me my sister doesn’t eat cookies, so I didn’t even have to share.
Now sister, we are going to go through every square inch of this store while I explain to you which are the best treats & toys. It’s going to take a while, but be oh-so-worth it for your education. You can thank me when you’re older.

Every now and then a new box of treats shows up at my door, and when it’s from my friends at The Honest Kitchen, you know it’s going to be a good day.

Birthday Week isn’t over yet my friends! We’re just getting started! Today I’ve got a super fun tutorial for some DIY Art you can make to brighten up your own home.
This DIY Dog Bone Art is easy to make, and so fun and cheerful too!
DIY Dog Bone Art Supplies:

Step 1: Choose 2 milkbones and spray paint with your favorite color
Step 2: Optionally you may choose to paint your frame the same color as well, or leave it as is.
Step 3: Once your paint is dry, remove the glass from your frame and add either a piece of colored mat board (which is what we used) or some colored paper. If you use colored paper make sure it’s glued down to something stiffer like a piece of cardboard.
Step 4: Using an adhesive, glue your milkbones in place on the frame.
Step 5: Hang and enjoy!
Just remember, even though your milkbones are now painted, they still smell like cookies to us dogs! So don’t display them anywhere your dog could get to them.
Mom has already told me many times I can look, but I can’t eat! (Apparently this art project isn’t interactive).
Despite the fact that this new DIY Dog Bone Art isn’t edible, I have to admit, it does add a little happy to my home!

As you may know I’ve been thinking a lot about what I eat lately. Ok, honestly, I think about what I’m going to be eating ALL THE TIME. Last week I wrote post about how my mom chooses pet food for me to eat in my rotational diet, and I’ve even discussed the portion size I’m eating each day to keep my figure trim. Well today I wanted to share the line of dog food I recently started eating from one of my favorite companies, Wellness.
I’ve been eating dry dog food from Wellness since I was just a puppy (and ate their puppy formula), and so has my best friend Trooper. Recently they came out with a brand new line, Wellness TruFood. TruFood uses fresh whole foods from farm, land and sea in their new treats, wet and dry dog and cat food.
The TruFood dry dog food is packed with real ingredients and free of grain, wheat, potatoes and artificial preservatives, colors and flavors. They also slow-bake raw, whole-prey meats with grain-free fiber like peas, chickpeas and lentils which gives TruFood up to 70% more protein than similar foods.
You can actually see some of the added veggies in Trufood, and because it’s meats are slow-baked, they caramelize, which makes it oh-so-tasty for us pups. I can attest, because mom says I started eating my meals much much faster once we switched over to TruFood.

Now if you own a Dachshund are owned by a Dachshund then this might sound familiar to you. Picture this, you open your front door and your dog darts out after some scent or sound (or perhaps just the thought of all of the above) and no matter how many times you call them they won’t come. Frustrating right? Imagine how us Dachshunds feel with all that nagging!
So it seems the alternative to always worrying that your dog won’t come when called is to keep them safe and secure on a leash at all times. It’s not a bad option, but what happens if you drop the leash, it breaks, or your dog accidentally gets out of the house?
In my mom’s case, she was tired of having to always leash me just to walk out our front door and get into the car to go to work everyday.

When I began to look forward to getting my treat in the car every morning (and seemed less interested in exploring the yard) mom removed my leash and continued to lure me to the car.
Another few weeks passed and mom stopped walking right next to me and instead went ahead of me to the car and cued me to come load up (and get my treat).
A few more weeks later mom stopped carrying the treats in her hand and instead left my Blue Buffalo Wilderness Treats in the car (the handy resealable bag is great for on-the-go-training). She also started allowing me out of the house in front of her.
And before she knew it I was running to the car (off leash) each morning and waiting to be lifted into my booster seat.

It didn’t take me long to realize that if I just went directly to the car I’d get a treat every single time.
The key here is routine, consistency, and very very yummy treats.
