How I Became Ammo

With a name like Ammo I always get questions about how I ended up with such an explosive name (for such a small dog). So I figured it was high time I shared the story of how I got my name.

A is for Ammo // Ammo the Dachshund Super Hero

I like to think I’ve really grown into my name over the past 6 years that I’ve had it, but my parents thought long and hard before they landed on “Ammo”.

In fact, it might help to show you a video of the VERY FIRST time I ever met my parents.

As you can see I really wasn’t too shy about asserting my personality! 😉

Throwback Thursday: Sweater Weather // Puppy Photos of Ammo the Dachshund

After meeting me, falling in love, and deciding I would get my forever home with them, mom and dad went home to contemplate what my new name would be.

How Ammo Got His Name - Trooper and Ranger - Puppy

Mom had picked out the name Ranger. She thought it was a strong name that sounded super cute with my soon to be best buddy’s name….Trooper! (Mom still says Trooper & Ranger would have been cute names).

How Ammo the Dachshund got his name

Dad picked out the name Ammo. He said I looked like a little bullet because I was so long.

How Ammo the Dachshund got his name - And the name that almost was, Robot!

The wildcard name that almost came to be….Robot! Hehe, I like to think that would have been a pretty funny name to have too.

Ammo the Dachshund // Puppy // Farmwork

In the end I became Ammo. Mostly because my dad had never had a dog before (mom had) and it seemed only fitting that he get to name his very first fur kid (at least according to mom). So Ammo it was! And you know what, I think it’s pretty fitting. I’m fast, powerful, and explosive. I even found out later on (via a Facebook fan) that Amo means love in Italian. How cool!

Even though my name is Ammo, I’ve got lots of little nicknames around the house that mom and dad like to call me:

Amee
Am
Amer
L’Amee (short for Little Amee)
Ween
Weenie
Monkey
Peanut
Miami (short for My Amee)

How did your dog get their name? Does he/she have any fun nicknames too? Do tell! Ammo the Dachshund // Blog Signature // Celebrity

Oh The Places You Sleep: Vol. 1

Dogs tend to sleep between 12 – 14 hours a day, and considering that makes up the majority of our day, we sometimes have to get a little creative with our napping spots. It could get quite boring if you slept the same way hour after hour, so I like to vary it up a little each time. So here’s a collection of some of my favorite ways to take a nap throughout the day!

12 Days of Cheer! DIY Holiday Dog Collar Flair

12 Days of Cheer! DIY Holiday Dog Collar Flair // Ammo the Dachshund

Yippee! It’s almost Christmas! And to get in the holiday spirit, I thought I’d share my fun an easy DIY for some holiday dog collar flair!

12 Days of Cheer! DIY Holiday Dog Collar Flair // Ammo the Dachshund

Here’s what you’ll need:

12 Days of Cheer! DIY Holiday Dog Collar Flair // Ammo the Dachshund

Following the directions that came with your fabric covered button kit, use your holiday fabric to create a button. For mine I used a 1″ kit.

Choosing a smaller pattern works best and may depend on the size of your button.

12 Days of Cheer! DIY Holiday Dog Collar Flair // Ammo the Dachshund

Then simply tie a small piece of elastic to the back of the button loop that will securely hold your button to the collar (thin elastic works best).

Then slip it onto your dog’s favorite collar, and you’ve got yourself some holiday flair!

Simple, fun, and oh-so-festive!

They were so easy to make that now I can’t decide which ones to wear….perhaps I should just wear them all!

Make sure to post your dog’s holiday flair on my Facebook page, so we can all join in on the festive fun! Happy Holidays! Ammo the Dachshund

Halloween Adventures with an American Icon

Disclaimer: this post is brought to you by Barkbox.

So seeing as how we’re just a few short days away from Halloween (or Halloweenie as I like to call it), I decided it was time to officially share my costume for this year. As you might already know, I’ve made it my mission each year to come up with a handmade costume (with some help from my mom and dad) – and this year was no exception!

Evel Knievel // Ammo the Dachshund's Halloween Costume

Of all the super heroes that have graced the pages of Marvel comics, there is only one real life superhero (well aside from me) …… Evel Knievel. And the legend lives on with my Halloween Costume this year!

Evel Knievel // Ammo the Dachshund's Halloween Costume

Evel Knievel was known as King of the Daredevils as he flew through the air on his motorcycle – over canyons, mountain lions, rattlesnakes, even buses.

Evel Knievel // Ammo the Dachshund's Halloween Costume

Of course when I chose to be him this Halloween I couldn’t help but envy his costume fashion flare and brave (albeit maybe a bit foolish too) daredevil antics.

Evel Knievel // Ammo the Dachshund's Halloween Costume

I’m glad he at least opted to wear a helmet!

Evel Knievel // Ammo the Dachshund's Halloween Costume

Considering Evel Knievel broke a record 32 bones in his career, which landed him in the Guinness Book of World Records, I knew some precautions had to be taken before I attempted my first daredevil feat.

Evel Knievel // Ammo the Dachshund's Halloween Costume

Evel Knievel // Ammo the Dachshund's Halloween Costume

So to prepare, I practiced falling…..gracefully. Well as gracefully as one can when flying through the air on a motorcycle.

Evel Knievel // Ammo the Dachshund's Halloween Costume

So after a thorough practice session on “landing” I headed out to the backyard to attempt my first stunt.

Evel Knievel // Ammo the Dachshund's Halloween Costume

Mom helped me set up some ramps, and I double triple checked them for safety.

Evel Knievel // Ammo the Dachshund's Halloween Costume

But seeing as how I was a little short on school buses for my first daredevil stunt, I had to improvise and use ponies instead.

Evel Knievel // Ammo the Dachshund's Halloween Costume

Also, I had a little trouble coming by a motorcycle, but not to worry – Mom’s vacuum seemed like the perfect thing to carry me through the air.

Evel Knievel // Ammo the Dachshund's Halloween Costume

Now if you’re particularly nervous about watching a dachshund dressed as Evel Knievel riding a vacuum over several ponies than I suggest you close your eyes for this next part. It’s not for the faint of heart.

Evel Knievel // Ammo the Dachshund's Halloween Costume

Better yet, I’ll spare you all the scary details and just let you know that I did it! I landed safely on the other side – clearing the ponies, and gently navigating my vacuum to the ground.

Evel Knievel // Ammo the Dachshund's Halloween Costume

But you know what, after my hair raising adventure through the air, I decided I’m much safer with all 4 feet on the ground.

Evel Knievel // Ammo the Dachshund's Halloween Costume

Especially when my October Barkbox showed up at my door!

Evel Knievel // Ammo the Dachshund's Halloween Costume

Packed full of lots of yummy Halloweenie goodies just for me, it totally got my into the spooky spirit! (As if wearing an Evel Knievel costume wasn’t Halloweenie enough)

Did you know that Barkbox has a new program called Scout’s Honor – and if you or your pup isn’t completely happy with an item, the BarkHappy team will replace it with something better suited – or issue a credit of equal value to the brand new BarkShop.

My favorite this month? This Plush Puppies Invincibles Cat!

And now that my Barkbox has arrived, something tells me I won’t be making it to the other side on my next big jump!

And now, I leave you with an Evel Knievel quote…

“Kids want to be like me, men want to be me, and the women want to be with me” – Evel Knievel

Happy Halloweenie everyone! Ammo the Dachshund

Friday Fetch: Architecture for Dogs

It’s no secret that I’m a lover of art and design, so when I stumbled across Architecture for Dogs I was mesmerized.

From Architecture for Dogs:
Architecture for Dogs, invented by architects and designers, is an extremely sincere collection of architecture and a new medium, which make dogs and their people happy. Dogs are people’s partners, living right beside them, but they are also animals that humans, through crossbreeding, have created in multitudes of breeds. Reexamining these close partners with fresh eyes may be a chance to reexamine both human beings themselves and the natural environment.

Each of their 13 designs are available for download in a blueprint format so that you can build the projects yourself.

The Architecture for Dogs Exhibition opens to the public on December 6, 2012 in the Miami Design District. For more information check out their website.

Each design is crafted with the dog in mind. For instance, a hammock for Jack Russell Terriers isn’t just a hammock; it’s a hammock stretched from the owner’s clothing, meaning the dog can appreciate their smell while resting.
