Dachshund Goes Sledding with Ponies

When the winter rolls around I sometimes (like most of you) spend a little more time indoors. Because honestly, I’d much rather be warm and toasty then freezing my tail off! But when it snows, that all changes, because one of my favorite activities involves a fresh dusting of snow and some of my furry four-legged friends.

Ammo the Dachshund // Sledding with Ponies

It’s time to go sledding with my ponies!

Ammo the Dachshund // Sledding with Ponies

All I need is a warm winter coat, an inner tube, and a willing pony! Good thing Boomerang and Blitz were more than happy to let me hitch a ride.

I hear even more snow is headed my way this Saturday……AND I CAN’T WAIT!

What sort of things do you do for fun in the snow with your dog? Ammo the Dachshund

10 Winter Coats that Fit Dachshunds

A few months ago I shared a collection of fall sweaters that were designed to fit my fellow dachshund friends. Well now that the colder weather has set in I thought it would be fun to share my recommendations for winter coats too!

So here is my collection of 10 Winter Coats that Fit Dachshunds – some of which I’ve tried and tested, and a few that seem to fit the bill for all those short legged/long backed doxies out there!

1. Voyagers K9 Apparel Winter Dog Coat

ammo the dachshund k9 voyagers coat

One of my go-to coats every winter is my Voyagers K9 Winter Coat. I’ve owned this coat since 2011 – and it’s held up fabulously over the years. It’s great on the farm, and the added hood is fabulous at keeping my ears warm. Not to mention I look oh-so-stylish when wearing it! You can fetch your own from Voyagers K9.

2. Noodle and Friends

Trendy Coats to Keep your Dachshund Warm // Noodle & Friends // Ammo the Dachshund

Over the years I’ve owned many Noodle and Friends Coats. Designed with the long bodied dogs in mind they also feature extra chest protection (great for when you’re low to the ground) and one of my favorite features – a built in d-ring so you don’t have to wear a harness too! Check out the entire line of dog coats from Noodle and Friends.

3. Teckelklub

10 Winter Coats that Fit Dachshunds

While I’ve never had the chance to try one of these TeckelKlub Coats, they do look exceptionally warm! These coats come in a variety of sizes to fit many dogs, and have a variety of lengths to accommodate the dachshund’s long bodies! You can even get them embroidered with your dog’s name! I’ve heard from several of my fans that this company makes some great coats. You can fetch one of these coats from TeckelKlub.

4. Hurtta

Winter on the Farm // Ammo the Dachshund

After winning a photo contest I got the chance to test out one of these Hurtta Summit Parka’s, and it’s an awesome winter coat that’s exceptionally warm. I love that they have openings for harnesses, and the added draw strings on the back makes it so you can adjust them to fit any length dog, even dachshunds! Fetch your own from Hurtta.

5. Ruffwear

Ruffwear Climate Changer // Ammo the Dachshund

I’ve owned the Ruffwear Climate Changer for quite some time now. And I have to say it is one of the warmest coats I’ve ever owned. Now while it’s not specifically designed for dachshunds, these coats are actually very long in the body and seem to fit my unique build like a glove. The only issue I had with the Climate Changer is that sometimes my legs got caught inside the sleeves (since they are a little extra long) – but mom fixed this issue for me by hemming them up some. But Ruffwear does make several winter coat designs that don’t have sleeves, which would likely be a little more conducive to short legged dachshunds without the need to do some hemming. You can fetch this coat and more from Ruffwear (*contains affiliate links)

6. Foggy Mountain Dog Coats

Foggy Mountain Dachshund Coat // Ammo the Dachshund

These horse blanket style dachshund coats are designed to fit the shorter leg breeds. While I haven’t tried this brand personally, I did used to own a blanket style coat when I was a puppy that fit me very well. You can fetch the Foggy Mountain Dachshund Coat from True Fit Dog Coats.

7. Lupo & Olimp Co.

Lupo and Olimp Fleece Dog Coats & Home Accessories + A Giveaway

These handmade fleece coats from Lupo & Olimp are exceptionally soft and warm. They are by far the thickest and warmest fleece jackets I have ever warm, and are great for layering on really cold days on the farm. The best part is they are handmade to fit your own dog! You can fetch them in a variety of colors from Lupo & Olimp Co. on Etsy.

8. Pepper Pet Wear

Custom Fit Dog Clothing from Pepper Petwear + A Giveaway

The folks at Pepper Pet Wear make a variety of winter coats – all of which can be custom made to fit your dog – dachshunds included! I’m always a big fan of coats that have added protection under the belly, and these definitely do that! Read my full review on the Pepper Pet Wear CoatsYou can check out these custom pet coats from Pepper Pet Wear on Etsy.

9. Dachshund Delights

10 Winter Coats that Fit Dachshunds

While I’ve never warm one, Dachshund Delights makes a whole line of custom coats for Dachshunds. From fleece, to hardier winter wear they have it all, including coats with built in harnesses. You can fetch one of these winter coats from Dachshund Delights.

10.  DJANGO Reversible Puffer Vest*

(*Ammo received compensation from DJANGO in exchange for an honest review of their Puffer Reversible Dog Coat)

Django Puffer Jacket

Ok seriously, every dog needs a puffer vest – it’s just so stylish! My friends at DJANGO sent me this one in sage green, and I totally love that it’s reversible to a fun red plaid color. They come in a variety of sizes and I love that they fit us deep chested dogs perfectly. They also have the much coveted (in my opinion) hole in the back for a leash attachment. You can fetch one from DJANGO.* Use Discount code AMMO15 for 15% off DJANGO’s Puffer Reversible Dog Coat (1 use per customer)

How to Remove Stubborn Pet Stains

Disclaimer: This post is brought to you by Chewy.com

Natural Pet Carpet Cleaner // Ammo the Dachshund

Recently my friends over at Chewy.com sent me a bottle of this Nature’s Miracle Stain & Odor Remover.

Now, first off, I don’t consider myself a “mess maker” – as I am fully house trained and haven’t had an “accident” since I was just a wee pup.

But then mom reminded me that our house does contain a few of my oops messes. Because lets be honest….

image via google image search.

So okay, maybe I do leave my share fair of stains around the house, after all I am a farm dog with access to lots of “yummy” goodies. I’ve also gotten quite good at aiming for the carpets as well, so perhaps I do have a use for this stain and odor remover.

So I sniffed out some Key Benefits of Nature’s Miracle:

  • Suitable for carpet, floors, or any hard surface
  • Neutralizes organic odors and removes stains
  • Quick drying
  • No rinsing necessary

Ingredients in Nature’s Miracle include:

  • Water
  • Nature’s Bio-Enzymatic Blend
  • Oxygen Boosters
  • Surfactant
  • Isopropyl Alcohol
  • Natural Citrus Scent

It’s also safe for use around children and pets. So just how did it stack up to my icky stain….

Natural Pet Carpet Cleaner // Ammo the Dachshund

Couldn’t even detect it!

Phew! I’m totally out of the dog house thanks to Nature’s Miracle. Thank goodness I now have a bottle on hand for those “just incase” moments.

Trax Review – The Best GPS Tracker for Dogs

Trax Review - A GPS Tracker for Dogs // Ammo the Dachshund

About a month ago my new friends over at Trax sent me one of their GPS Trackers to test out. Now if you’ve been reading my blog for quite some time, then you might know that I’ve had my eye on GPS Trackers for quite some time.

Paired with the free Trax app (available for apple and android users) using the Trax Tracker can help you keep a watchful eye on your pets and other loved ones.

Trax Review - A GPS Tracker for Dogs // Ammo the Dachshund

My mom never quite pulled the trigger on getting me one because she hadn’t found just the right one – that is until Trax popped onto the market. Trax has a whole slew of features that make it stand out above the others that are available.

Trax Review - A GPS Tracker for Dogs // Ammo the Dachshund

Trax comes with all the items you see here, which includes a handy case to attach to clothing and one to attach to your dog’s collar depending on how you plan to use it.

Trax Review - A GPS Tracker for Dogs // Ammo the Dachshund

The usb cord charger plugs into a slot on the tracker and can be charged by plugging into any usb port you might have (computer, car charger that has a usb converter, etc).

Trax is water resistant, shockproof, stain resistant, and functions in weather -10 °C to +40 °C – but you can help protect it further from the elements by placing a piece of tape over the usb port to help keep out water.

Trax Review - A GPS Tracker for Dogs // Ammo the Dachshund

Since I am a dog, I opted to slip mine into the dog collar silicone case, which then easily slides onto any dog collar. One of the things I like about Trax (above a lot of other trackers out there) is the size (approximately 2.2in x 1.5in x 0.4in), it’s one of the smallest on the market – which makes it perfect for even small dogs like me to wear.

Trax Review - A GPS Tracker for Dogs // Ammo the Dachshund

Once turned on the Trax Tracker takes a few seconds to locate satellites in your area – especially the first time you start it up. The company does note that it’s quicker to locate them in a more rural setting then in a city setting (because of the tall buildings). For me it took no time at all to connect since I tested it out on the farm for the first time.

You can also share your Trax Tracker between multiple smart phones, so both mom and dad can be tracking me at all times.

Trax Review - A GPS Tracker for Dogs // Ammo the Dachshund

One of the features my mom loved about Trax is the ability to set up Geofences. A Geofence is essentially a virtual safe zone for your dog. With Trax you can set up as many geofences as you like (while many of their competitors only offer the option for 1), and they can be any size and even any shape (doesn’t have to be a square or a circle even). With geofences enabled you can receive a text alert on your smart phone whenever your pet enters or exits those areas. You can even set up a schedule for when you want the geofences to be active (for example during the hours you are at work monday through friday).

Trax Review - A GPS Tracker for Dogs // Ammo the Dachshund

Trax location updates depend on how fast the tracker is moving and they can be as frequent as every 3 second.

Trax is also working on adding proximity geofences where you can surround yourself with a dynamic digital fence that moves when you do. This would be great for when you walk your dog off leash as you’ll get a notification when he strays too far.

Trax Review - A GPS Tracker for Dogs // Ammo the Dachshund

While tracking your dog you can open up the Trax app at anytime to get an idea of where your pet is. In fact one day while I was testing out Trax on the farm my mom heard me faintly barking in the distance. She popped open the Trax app and quickly located me near one of the horses’ pastures. She used the app to track me and found me lying on the ground with my legs caught inside of one of my jackets (the perils of short legs!). We had quite a good laugh after mom set me free, but I can tell you I was super thankful for Trax after that!

Trax Review - A GPS Tracker for Dogs // Ammo the Dachshund

While I’ve always had free reign of the 20 acre farm, Trax has been great for my freedom – because now my mom doesn’t have to worry about where I am or what I’m getting into, because my location is always right at her fingertips.

Trax Review - A GPS Tracker for Dogs // Ammo the Dachshund

Now while I always liked to keep my whereabouts on the farm a bit elusive – things are a little different now because with the Trax history view my mom can view my travels at any certain time throughout the day. My groundhog hunting trails are no longer a secret, drat.

Trax Review - A GPS Tracker for Dogs // Ammo the Dachshund

Another neat feature in the Trax app is augmented reality view (AR), with this feature enabled you can use your smartphone’s built-in camera to locate and show the distance to your tracker. It will appear in the image on your phone once it’s pointed in the right direction of your tracker.

Trax Review - A GPS Tracker for Dogs // Ammo the Dachshund

My mom also found a special use for the Trax Tracker when I’m out running errands with her. Trax has the ability to set up speed alerts. So if your dog were to start traveling over the speed limit you set, you would be notified via text alert on your phone. Mom tested out this feature while I was sitting outside in the parking lot during a quick errand – but not to worry, no one tried to kidnap me – and if they ever did my mom would HUNT THEM DOWN.

Trax Review - A GPS Tracker for Dogs // Ammo the Dachshund

But it is nice to know I’m a little safer with speed alerts set up on my Trax Tracker. Although my mom did want to note it would be helpful if the text alerts displayed in miles instead of km.

Trax Review - A GPS Tracker for Dogs // Ammo the Dachshund

When you purchase Trax, two years of data and service are included, therefore during these first two years there will be no monthly fee! After these two years, you will have the option to continue your usage on a monthly basis for a fee of $5.00 or 3.95 EUR per month. Compared to the other comprable GPS Trackers I investigated, Trax is able to offer the most affordable monthly rates out of any of them.

Battery life is also important when you are looking into GPS Trackers for your dog, and Trax comes with a rechargeable battery lasting 1 day depending on how active your child/dog is. Trax is constantly enhancing those figures in every firmware update. My battery has been lasting up to about 2 weeks when I use it 3 -5 times a week for about 3-4 hours at a time.

Now while I can’t say I’ve personally tried any of the other trackers on the market, I can say that I’m not sure how I’ll ever go back to not having one. I feel like I’ve entered the future! I highly recommend checking out the Trax GPS Tracker for your dog, you can fetch one for $249 from Trax. Ammo the Dachshund

2015 New Year Resolutions

Happy New Year // Ammo the Dachshund

I’m now about a week into 2015, and just like years past I like to come up with a few resolutions for the new year. Last year I came up with a list of several goals I wanted like to accomplish. Lets see how I did…

2014 Goals:

  1. Relax more, and don’t work so hard!
Afternoon Nap // Ammo the Dachshund
I always struggle with this one as I take on a lot of roles, shop dog, farm dog, guard dog at home. But I tried to relax some!

  2. Go on more walks around my neighborhood
My Busy Memorial Day Weekend // Ammo the Dachshund
I’m happy to report in the summer especially I tried to go on at least 1 walk a week through my neighborhood, I also went hiking a lot more too!

  3. Take a trip to the dog beach again
A Day at the Beach // Ammo the Dachshund
I went for a day trip this year to one of the Delaware beaches and had a blast, I also created my own beach at the farm too!

  4. Compete in a Barn Hunt Competition
I would still love to make it to a barn hunt competition some day, sadly 2014 just wasn’t the year!

  5. Take a new training class

Ammo the Dachshund // Agility // Teeter Totter
While I didn’t attend any new training classes I did continue on with my dog agility training for most of the year.

Happy New Year // Ammo the Dachshund

For 2015 I decided to do something a little different. Instead of a whole list of goals I would like to accomplish I have come up with just one resolution.

My resolution for this year is to take more time to be with my family, enjoy as many adventures as possible, and learn to unplug a bit. As you know I lead quite the busy life for a dog. Not only do I work everyday in my mom’s shop as the official greeter, but I also have duties on the farm, as well as guard dog duties at home – and lets not forget my love of adventure! And while I started this blog because I wanted to share my fun adventures with you, sometimes I struggle to have a balance of adventure time and “blogging” time.

ammo the dachshund blogging outdoors

So while I have no plans to stop sharing my happy adventures with you (it’s what keeps my tail wagging everyday!), I have decided that starting next week I will be blogging 4 days a week instead of 5. (Tuesday through Friday).

But don’t worry, if you find yourself missing your monday dose of me – you can always catch adorable photos of me daily on my Facebook page and instagram account.

I’m looking forward to 2015 and all it has to bring, and I’m hoping to have even more excitement and adventures to share with you in the months to come! xoxo, Ammo the Dachshund

Merry Christmas from Ammo

12 Days of Cheer! Merry Christmas from Ammo the Dachshund

Merry Christmas Friends!!!

I hope you’ve enjoyed celebrating the 12 Days of Cheer with me! December has been quite the crazy whirlwind for me as mom and I have been working lots of overtime at the shop to fulfill everyone’s Christmas framing orders. So since I haven’t had a day off in about 3 weeks, I think I’m pretty much due for one. So I’m going to be taking a short little blogging break until after the new year as I spend today celebrating Christmas with my friends and family.

But incase you’ll miss my fuzzy little face (and wiggly tail), I will be posting over on my Facebook page in the meantime.

12 Days of Cheer! The Annual Christmas Tree Murder

The Annual Murdering of our Christmas Tree // Ammo the Dachshund

Every year I head off to the Tricolor Tree Farm to cut down murder my holiday tree.

After spending a good while looking for our unsuspecting tree victim we take the obligatory selfie with the “chosen one”.

All before chopping it down to bring into our home. It’s sort of a funny tradition if you really think about it, but my dad takes the tree murdering very seriously.

And before you know it, the deed is done, and our tree is ready to be carted off to its new home.
