Trax GPS Pet Tracker to Keep Dogs Safe + A Giveaway

You might remember that at the beginning of this year I started testing out a new GPS Pet Tracker on the market to keep pets (and anything else you want) safe called Trax.

Trax GPS Pet Tracker to Keep Dogs Safe + A Giveaway

This tiny little device that gets attached to my collar has changed the way I get to enjoy time on the farm. Not to mention it keeps my mom from worrying ALL THE TIME (She’s a bit dramatic if you ask me) about what I’m doing.

Dachshund Life Struggle with Ammo the Dachshund

Now for those of you that are dachshund owners – this is a common scene I’m sure you know all too well. You trust “dachshund” to stay close, you unhook leash, dachshund takes off and pretends they can’t hear your frantic yelling, you chase dachshund down, you tie dachshund up again, no one is happy.

Trax GPS Pet Tracker to Keep Dogs Safe + A Giveaway

Now while a good recall is always a good idea, I (nor any dog) wants to listen all of the time (life is just too short for that), and being tied up 24/7 is just oh so sad. So enter the Trax GPS Tracker.

Trax Review - A GPS Tracker for Dogs // Ammo the Dachshund

With this around my neck my mom feels better about letting me roam the farm (which is not fenced) because she can check in on me any time she wants. I’m happy because I don’t have to be tied up as much, and I still get to go on my coveted hunting excursions!

Trax GPS Pet Tracker to Keep Dogs Safe + A Giveaway

Mom sets up a “geo-fence” around the areas she would like me to stay and anytime I cross the invisible boundary she gets a text to notify her and can check in to see where I’m at using the free Trax mobile app.

Trax GPS Pet Tracker to Keep Dogs Safe + A Giveaway

And guess what, it even works underground! Thanks to Trax I’m able to enjoy my time outdoors without the restrictions of a leash. If you haven’t tried it, it’s heaven!

Trax GPS Pet Tracker to Keep Dogs Safe + A Giveaway

Mom even leaves my Trax on me when I’m home alone, and it’s kinda fun to check it later to see where exactly I traveled inside the house. Now while the farmhouse is still too new to show up on the aerial view of the map, you can sort of still decipher that I only traveled to check the side doors and to my dog bed while mom was gone.

Trax GPS Pet Tracker to Keep Dogs Safe + A Giveaway

A fun little tip for all you Trax wearers out there is that since Trax is only water resistant (not waterproof), mom slips mine into one of these tiny little bags before putting it on my collar to make sure it doesn’t ever get too wet on dewy mornings or rainy days.

Thanks Trax for helping set me free, and making sure I get to check EVERY SINGLE ONE of my ground hog holes!

Trax GPS Pet Tracker to Keep Dogs Safe + A Giveaway

My pal Minnow is thrilled that I can keep those pesky critters at bay so he has no scary holes to fall into when he’s playing in the pasture.

You can fetch your own Trax GPS Pet Tracker for $249 + 2 years of free service ($5/month for each additional year). Which is much cheaper than many of the comparable trackers we have researched.

Make sure you check out my full review from back in January with even more nifty features that are available when you purchase the Trax GPS Tracker.

5 Tips for Taking Better Pictures of Your Dog

It’s no secret that I love having my photo taken. It’s been years and years of practice to get these super model moves down pat!

Ammo the Dachshund Studio Photos

And while I’m pretty much a pro infront of the lens, I do have a mom who’s got a few tricks up her sleeve when it comes to capturing adorable shots of yours truly. So I thought it would be fun to pick her brain, and share some tips on how you can capture some great pictures like these of your own pets!

Photographer's Muse // Ammo the Dachshund

5 Tips for Taking Better Pictures of Your Dog:

1. Have Amazing Treats

Ammo the Dachshund - Pony Cookie - Howl Naturale

Until you find that amazing treat (or meat) that makes your dog do back flips, you’re not going to get them to be interested in your photo session. Good treats go a long way, and if your dog is willing to do anything to get them, then you might just get that shot you were looking for.

2. Get Down Low

Winter on the Farm // Ammo the Dachshund

Dogs aren’t that big (well unless maybe you have a great dane), so getting yourself on the floor and down to the dog’s level is going to give you a better picture every time.

3. Practice “Waiting”

Evel Knievel // Ammo the Dachshund's Halloween Costume

Teaching your dog commands such as “wait” (my term for stay put and don’t move) is only going to help you get that amazing picture. Using positive reinforcement and some yummy treats practice asking your dog to hold still for pictures.

4. Let Your Dog Be a Dog

Barkbox Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

As fun as some of the posed shots are, it’s even more fun for your dog just to play and be themselves. Some of the best shots come from letting your dog do their own thing and being there to capture the moment (or the mess).

5. Prop Up Your Pet

Purple Possum Dachshund Scarf Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

Have a squirmy dog that won’t sit still? Prop them up on something high (and safe) so they don’t have room to roam. This will keep you from chasing your dog all over trying to snag a photo.

A Day at the Beach // Ammo the Dachshund

And there you have it, 5 tips to grabbing shots of your pet like a pro! Above all else, make picture time fun for your dog and I’m sure you’ll get that photograph! There’s many more where that came from, if you liked my mom’s tips for photographing pets let me know in the comments below and perhaps I’ll share some more soon!Ammo the Dachshund // Blog Signature // Celebrity

Throwback Thursday: Diva Behind the Lens

It’s been a little while since I’ve done a Throwback Thursday post, so today I thought I’d share a little peek behind the lens from way back in 2012.

While it’s very true, I know how to take a dashing photo, I also sometimes like to be a little demanding behind the lens.

As in “give me more cookies now”. Supermodels are allowed to be demanding though right?

Work Weekend

Adventures around my house have been pretty light lately while mom and dad are busy  working on my new kitchen. If all goes well, by the end of next week I should have my food bowls back where they belong, in the kitchen!

From electrical work, plumbing, drywall, spackling & painting – my mom and dad are doing it all (with a little help from our friends at Lowes on the new flooring). As much as I hate that this weekend work is cutting into my adventure time, mom says with all the money we are saving by doing it ourselves – there will be so many more adventures we’ll be able to go on!

That does sound pretty good to me. What sort of home renovations has your dog lived through? Ammo the Dachshund // Blog Signature // Celebrity

Summer Tubing with Ammo the Dachshund

A few weekends ago some of my family from out of town came for a visit. Since I’m always up for a fun adventure, I decided to show them a good time with a weekend excursion on the river!

River Tubing with Ammo the Dachshund

Just down the road from the family farm is the Brandywine River, which is the perfect place to do some river tubing on a hot day!

River Tubing with Ammo the Dachshund

Since this wasn’t my first tubing adventure I got pretty brave and performed some dare-devilish (I was Evel Knievel for Halloween after all) stunts on the tubes by balancing on the edge!

River Tubing with Ammo the Dachshund

River Tubing with Ammo the Dachshund

I wasn’t the only one enjoying the river that day either, we even found this adorable turtle taking a dip!

River Tubing with Ammo the Dachshund

As the sun started to set over the river I decided to trade in my tube for a canoe since it was getting a little chilly in the water.

River Tubing with Ammo the Dachshund

River Tubing with Ammo the Dachshund

I love to navigate the waters and I always have to stand at the very tip of the canoe (so I get to see everything first), even if it means that I might occasionally fall overboard. Not to worry though, I’m a pretty good swimmer!

River Tubing with Ammo the Dachshund

Eventually we decided to park the canoe so we could take a swim in the river, which is also where I got to perform my very first water rescue!

River Tubing with Ammo the Dachshund

River Tubing with Ammo the Dachshund

Ok technically no one was ever really drowning, but how was I supposed to know that? I’m a Super Hero trained to save people, and when you’re a teeny tiny dog like me everything looks dangerous!

River Tubing with Ammo the Dachshund

Thankfully everyone survived the rope swing, and I made sure my entire family made it back into their rafts for the remainder of the trip home.

River Tubing with Ammo the Dachshund

Well, that is until we hit a river road block! “Everyone stay with your flotation device, keep your hands inside the raft, and do not drown!”

Phew! River Tubing is stressful for a Super Hero!Ammo the Dachshund // Blog Signature // Celebrity

Do you think your dog would attempt to save you if you were drowning? (Don’t worry, I’m sure they probably would….unless there was an alluring groundhog hole nearby of course!)

How to Choose the Right Food for your Dog

Choosing the right dog food for your dog can be an overwhelming process. There are so many choices these days, from grain free, to de-hydrated, to raw – how the heck are you supposed to pick one?

Open Farm Ethically Raised Dog Food Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

While my mom claims to be no pet food nutrition expert, she thought it would be helpful if we gave you some handy tips as to how she chooses pet foods for me.

March Breakfast Barkbox // Ammo the Dachshund $5 off with code AMMO5

For starters I’ve been on a rotational diet since I was just a wee pup. What this means is that each time I get to the end of a bag of dog food, mom switches me to a different brand of food. Who wants to eat the same food every day of their life? Not me! Plus mom believes that different foods have different nutritional benefits, so rotating foods makes sure I get the best of all of them (at least thats the theory). This rotational diet may not work for all dogs, especially ones that may have sensitivities to certain things, or are on special dietary restrictions due to health reasons. So it’s best to know what might work for your own dog and your own situation.

Tips for Keeping your Pet Trim // Ammo the Dachshund

Now while many people might defer to their veterinarian for feeding recommendations, I’ve found that while vets are schooled in medical issues, most of them are not trained in pet nutrition. Many of them just recommend what’s suggested within their industry, and while that’s not to say it’s always a bad suggestion, my mom feels that doing her own research will provide me with the best choice in food.

March Breakfast Barkbox // Ammo the Dachshund $5 off with code AMMO5

So before I dive into what my mom looks for in a pet food, lets talk about the different types of dog foods:

Dry: The “kibble” most people are familiar with. It travels and stores well, but is considered a more processed food because the ingredients aren’t fresh.

Wet: What many people might call “canned food”, this food is kept moist and easy for most dogs to ingest. It is much more perishable because of this.

De-Hydrated: This is essentially raw foods that have been dehydrated to lock in the nutrients. It’s less processed than dry food, but can take time to prepare as it typically needs water to “plump up”.

Raw: Fresh whole foods in their purest form. Typically you have to buy meats frequently to maintain freshness, and ingredients have to be handled properly to prevent illnesses to your dog.

Homemade: Fresh ingredients that are selected by the owner, and made to their own specifications. You have to have a thorough knowledge of what your dog can eat and may need, and it does take a good bit of dedication to make.

Sleepypod Yummy Travel Bowl Product Review & Giveaway via Ammo the Dachshund

I have never eaten Raw or Homemade dog food, mostly because mom doesn’t know a ton about feeding these types, and more importantly because of my lifestyle. I sometimes eat dinner at home, other times on the farm, and frequently at work – so these types would not travel well or keep as fresh in these situations.

I’ve tried Wet food before (when I was a puppy), but I wasn’t a super big fan of it, not to mention it also doesn’t travel well either. My pal Trooper eats a scoop of it everyday in all his meals and loves it, so it may depend on your own dog.

What I do eat is Dry (which is what I have eaten since I was a puppy), and more recently I am testing out De-Hydrated food as well. In the coming weeks I will be reviewing some of my picks for both types of food, so stay tuned for that!

JClay Pottery Dog Bowl Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

So since I’m most familiar with Dry & De-Hydrated Pet Foods, lets talk about what my mom looks for when choosing a brand for me to eat.

Dog Food Ingredients

What to look for when choosing a pet food:

  • Small Breed Size: When possible I try to eat a small breed formula because as a small dog I need more calories to fuel my fast metabolism. Most small breed foods are formulated for this, and they also come in a smaller size which makes it easier for small dogs to chew.
  • Adult Food: Since I’m only 6, I like to pick a food that is formulated for adult dogs (if I were a puppy or senior dog I would look for something formulated for this). Different life stages require different formulas, and these types take that into consideration. When I turn double digits I may start looking into a senior formula.
  • Meat: As far as ingredients are concerned I always look to make sure the first ingredient in a pet food is always meat. Specifically avoiding any foods that list “meat-meal” or just “meat” (not specifying the type) and “by-product”. Whole meats are always my top choice in a food, but many dry foods that I have seen still contain products such as “chicken meal” or “fish meal”. Dry Foods are still processed so I think it would likely be pretty hard to avoid any type of meat meal if you’re feeding this.
  • Origin: I would never feed anything made in China due to all the issues we have been hearing about in the news lately associated with dog deaths and health issues. I prefer my food to be made in the USA and Canada.
  • Un-Healthy Ingredients: There are certain things that should not be in a dog food. See the chart above for some examples of what I wouldn’t want in a pet food.
  • Healthy Ingredients: There are many ingredients that are healthy and great for a dog to be eating (see chart above for examples).
  • Grain-Free: Grain Free foods simply means that the food does not contain any unhealthy fillers such as wheat, corn, soy, and barely. Some alternatives that are healthier for your dog would be a food that contains: white potatoes, green peas, sweet potatoes, carrots, and chickpeas. Research has showed that grains were never really part of the diet that our wild dog ancestors may have eaten. Many dogs have sensitivities to grains in their foods, but even if they don’t eating grain free may still improve their digestion and skin & coat health.
  • Protein: A high protein food can help with easier digestion and nutritional absorption. It can also mean better bathroom visits for your pet. So I look for a food that has a higher protein percentage.
  • Reviews & Recalls: I always check to see if a brand has any recent recalls, and I search the web to see what types of company reviews they have. Steer clear of any brands that might have a history of a lot of recalls, and bad customer reviews.

Can you spot which of these foods my mom wouldn’t feed me based on the ingredients?…. (click on the images to view them larger)

Pedigree Pet Food Label

Trufood Ingredients List

Without naming names, the second label pictured is a much better choice, and one of the brands I eat myself. You’ll notice with the yellow label the very first ingredient was Corn, followed by “meat and bone meal” (which doesn’t even specify what kind of meat it is), and also included a lot of dyes that weren’t healthy. Definitely a product I would be steering clear of personally.

Following these guidelines for choosing foods, my mom also does the same for any treats or cookies she feeds me.

While my search for great pet foods never really ends, here’s the current list of foods that I have been rotating through my diet:

Easy Frozen Dog Treats with Happy Lapper + A Giveaway

Lets face it, Summer is H O T! Which is why my mom helped me come up with a fantastic way to help you and your pup cool off this summer. These super easy DIY Frozen Dog Treats are the perfect way to spend a hot day!

Easy Frozen Dog Treats with Happy Lapper + A Giveaway

Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

*contains affiliate links

Easy Frozen Dog Treats with Happy Lapper + A Giveaway

Now before we dive into how to make these frozen treats, I bet you’re wondering what the Happy Lapper is. It’s this super cool frozen dog treat holder designed and created for dogs by a small business owner in my home state of Pennsylvania! It makes eating frozen treats a snap for all the dogs out there, and I’ll show you just how to use it after I share how to make these 2 ingredient frozen treats.

Easy Frozen Dog Treats with Happy Lapper + A Giveaway

I decided to make 2 ingredient treats (all you need is bananas and peanut butter) because most frozen treats for dogs have yogurt in them. While yogurt is super yummy, I actually have a sensitivity to dairy (just like my mom who is lactose intolerant) so I tend to steer clear of the yogurt!

So all you need to get started is your 3 bananas and your 1/2 cup of peanut butter.

Easy Frozen Dog Treats with Happy Lapper + A Giveaway

Simply pop them in the blender and mix those two yummy things up into a fine paste! You’ll notice I was getting my treat making on outside, mostly because if you remember, my kitchen looks like this right now. But the great news is, you don’t even need a functioning kitchen to make these treats!

Easy Frozen Dog Treats with Happy Lapper + A Giveaway

Then simply dish out the mixture evenly into your cupcake liners (or whatever you choose to use) and pop them in the freezer until frozen.

Easy Frozen Dog Treats with Happy Lapper + A Giveaway

While you wait for your treats to freeze, it’s perfectly ok to lick the spoon. You can’t let any of the yumminess go to waste!

Easy Frozen Dog Treats with Happy Lapper + A Giveaway

The Happy Lapper Frozen Treat Holder was going to be a great addition to my upcoming snack. It’s also dishwasher safe and made from 100% non toxic materials.

Easy Frozen Dog Treats with Happy Lapper + A Giveaway

Once your treats are frozen you simply pop them into the Happy Lapper (I decided to leave mine in the cupcake liners, but you can also pop them out if you prefer).

Easy Frozen Dog Treats with Happy Lapper + A Giveaway

Then place the Happy Lapper on the floor for your dog to enjoy! The Happy Lapper has a non-skid base to keep it from moving around while your dog licks it. I can’t tell you how annoying it is to lick a treat and have it slide all around the house (or worse it slides so much you have to make your mom or dad hold it for you!).

Easy Frozen Dog Treats with Happy Lapper + A Giveaway

I’m such a nice guy, that I decided to share my frozen treats with my best pal Trooper.

Easy Frozen Dog Treats with Happy Lapper + A Giveaway

Trooper’s Happy Lapper got placed under the leg of a chair to keep it even more securely in place, and you could even have your mom or dad hold it down with their foot too. Mom thought this was a neat idea for dogs who might like to steal each other’s treats (of course I would NEVER do that), because you could put their treats under the leg of a chair at opposite ends of the house.

Easy Frozen Dog Treats with Happy Lapper + A Giveaway

Smarty pants Trooper also got creative and figured out how to hold his treat down himself. (I could have done that too if I had really wanted….he’s not the only smart one around here!)

Easy Frozen Dog Treats with Happy Lapper + A Giveaway

Trooper and I loved the Happy Lapper, and think it’s a great addition to your summertime frozen pet treats. You can even use it with store-bought treats*, or any homemade ones you might want to make for your pup (Pretty Fluffy has a great DIY E-Book out that has some yummy frozen treat recipes in it).

You can fetch your own Happy Lapper for $12.50 and $4 flat rate shipping (no matter how many you buy!). These would make a great gift for all your dog friends this summer!
