Party for a Horse

Throwing a party for a horse

What’s better than watermelon on a hot summer day? I’ll tell you what….

Throwing a party for a horse

…a party for a horse! Not just any horse, but my pal Willis! See way back last year he got a pretty bad leg injury in the pasture (here we are watching a time-lapse video of his serious wound, and don’t worry, I spared you the close-up details). Since he’s about to turn 30 years old this year….and finally over his injury, we decided to throw a party to celebrate!

Throwing a party for a horse

Everyone on the farm pitched in to help Willis heal, myself included. I was entertainment for him when he was stuck inside for months, and I helped keep him company on his daily walks.

Throwing a party for a horse

After some food and reminiscing about how far Willis has come, we all headed out to the barn to see the big guy himself.

Throwing a party for a horse

Willis’ owner, and even the vet who helped save him along with everyone else at the farm came out to celebrate.

Throwing a party for a horse

Willis got a big “carrot cake” and lots of love since we’re all so happy to see him recovered.

Throwing a party for a horse

Even Minnow was excited for the party, although he may have been a bit jealous he didn’t get a carrot cake too.

Throwing a party for a horse

Finally time to relax, since Mr. Willis is going to be just fine now. You hear that Willis? No more injuries, because this dog can’t take another one!

Mom thought it was neat that the box came with some veterinary care items, as it’s always nice to have things like that on hand just incase of an emergency. (Paws crossed we never actually need to use it though). Some of the products I had come across before, while others were new to me, but all of them seemed to be healthy and appropriate items for me. All of the items are also made in the USA or Canada.

Baseball, Huskies, and First Aid Kits

Ammo and Shilah // Ammo the Dachshund

Over the weekend I took a trip to one of the local baseball fields in my town.

Ammo and Shilah // Ammo the Dachshund

I practiced running the bases (you know for when I hit a home run), and found myself wishing I hadn’t left my baseball glove at home.

Ammo and Shilah // Ammo the Dachshund

And just when I thought my baseball team was only going to consist of me and my shadow…..my pal Shilah showed up!

Ammo and Shilah // Ammo the Dachshund

Shilah (being the puppy that she is) didn’t really have the attention span to play a game of baseball with me, so we decided to take a walk around the park instead.

We sniffed for buried treasures, and I showed Shilah how fast I can run! (It’s really really fast incase you were wondering)

And when we were done with our adventure at the park I invited Shilah back to my house for a cookout!

Ammo and Shilah // Ammo the Dachshund

Back at my house we had fun romping in the backyard, and I even let Shilah borrow my mom and her camera. Sometimes even celebrities like me need to share their paparazzi.

Shilah is quite the looker isn’t she?

Then, right before dinner we had to break out my pet first aid kit for a little uh oh!

Ammo and Shilah // Ammo the Dachshund

See Shilah had been so busy playing in the backyard that she didn’t even notice that she had broken a toenail (those silly girls and their long nails).

Ammo and Shilah // Ammo the Dachshund

Not to worry though, Shilah’s mommy took great care in doctoring her up. We cleaned it up and applied some antibiotic ointment.

Shilah had to spend the rest of the evening in my xpen “resting”, but I know she’ll be back for a visit in no time and we’ll be romping around in the backyard again hunting for treasures and rolling in stink. Maybe I’ll buy her a nail file for Christmas. *wink*

DIY Pet First Aid Kit

As you know, this week I’m on a road trip with my family to North Carolina. Before I set out on my big adventure, there was some things that had to be checked off my to-do list. Once of those items included creating a Pet First Aid Kit to have with me just incase there was a pet emergency. You can never be too prepared!

Before creating my kit I researched what I should include in it. I ended up coming up with my own concoction of items that I gathered from lists on the American Red Cross, the Animal Poison Control Center, and the American Veterinary Medical Association.

I admit, my own first aid kit has quite a few items in it, but isn’t that the point – to be OVER PREPARED? I probably would of made a really good boy scout!

Many of the items in my kit I already had on hand (the benefit of having a grandma who is a nurse), but I gathered them all up and put them into a handy kit that will travel with me in the car from now on.

Not pictured in my kit are also a few handy iPhone apps that Mom helped me download.

Ammo the Dachshund's DIY Pet First Aid KitThe Pet First Aid App is $3.99 in the apple store, and one of my very favorite purchases. Not only does it help you out in the case of an emergency (by telling you how to give CPR to your pet, how to control bleeding and so much more), but it also helps you store and organize records on your pet; like when they are due for shots, their license and registration id’s, and any medications or conditions.

Ammo the Dachshund's DIY Pet First Aid KitThe Pet MD Symptom Checker is also a useful app to have in your arsenal and is $0.99 in the app store. Easily plug in symptoms of your dog or cat and be directed to articles of possible diagnosis.

You should also make sure you store important phone numbers for your pet in your phone. I keep on hand my personal vet’s number, a local 24 hour emergency vet number, the Pet Poison Helpline number (1-800-213-6680), and a phone number for an emergency vet where-ever I will be traveling to.

I hope to never have to use the items in my pet first aid kit, but I sleep a little sounder at night knowing that I’m extra prepared in case I ever need it!

Anyone else have a pet first aid kit in their car? Any other suggestions of items I may have forgotten to include? Do tell! Ammo the Dachshund

Even Heroes aren’t Invincible

Yes, it’s true, I may be a super hero but even heroes have accidents and over the weekend I had a little accident myself on the farm. See I was having a grand time playing chase with my pal Trooper when something punctured my side. I’m not sure if it was Trooper’s claw, or perhaps a fence board – on account of I was running way too fast to know for sure.

Ammo the Dachshund gets a boo boo

Regardless it definitely hurt!

Dad brought some medical supplies from home out to the farm so I could get my boo boo doctored up (on account of it was Sunday and my vet’s office wasn’t  open…not to mention it wasn’t a “medical emergency” per say….I’m a pretty tough dude).

Ammo the Dachshund gets a boo boo

I tried to be brave while I was bandaged up, but I was more upset that fun time with Trooper for the day was over.

Ammo the Dachshund gets a boo boo

I had to spend the rest of my day resting quietly in the car while mom did the farmwork without me, but upon returning home activities resumed pretty much as normal – even if I did look like I was a victim of a magician’s saw act gone wrong.

Mom says we’ll be taking a trip to the vet today, just to be sure my wound is healing properly…..my paws are crossed they still let me go to agility this afternoon. I can’t wait to tell my agility friends about my battle wound!

I’ll be sure to update all my fans on my facebook page as to the status of my Dr’s visit, but have no fear, I’m sure I’ll be back to my regular adventures in no time!

UPDATE: The vet checked me over, and I didn’t even need stitches! Apparently super heroes are super awesome at healing themselves, and I even got to attend my agility class!Ammo the Dachshund
