Meatballs in My Belly

Meatballs in my Belly // Ammo the Dachshund

Over the weekend my mom and dad decided to make some homemade hamburgers – in preparation for some home barbecuing fun this summer. I was a little worried I was going to be left out of the burger fun, when mom pulled out something just for me.

Meatballs in my Belly // Ammo the Dachshund

Mom said she was going to make me some mutt meatballs! This fun Treat Mix was included in one of my past Barkbox’s, and all that was needed to make them was a 1 pound package of ground meat, one egg, and the mutt meatballs mix.

Meatballs in my Belly // Ammo the Dachshund

First mom stirred all the ingredients into a bowl.

Then she laid them out on a tray to bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

The 30 minutes wait was the hardest part about the whole process.

Finally they popped out of the oven all golden brown!

I could smell those yummy meatballs a mile away!

I recently got the chance to test out a package of these Wellness Petite Bites from my friends at Chewy.com. Now I’m quite familiar with the Wellness brand, in fact I eat their grain-free small breed kibble on a daily basis, so I had no doubt that I would love their small breed snacks.

Chewy.com Wellness Petite Treats Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

These Grain-Free Petite Treats are just the right size for small breed dogs. They contain the healthy ingredients their little bodies deserve. Each mini-bite is packed with great flavor from whole foods along with flaxseed to promote a healthy, shiny coat. Without artificial colors or flavors, these healthy treats are perfect for training, treating or just plain spoiling!

A couple of weekends ago I popped this package of Wellness Petite Bites into my travel bag and hit the hiking trail with my pal Shilah the Husky.

Even though they are designed for the smaller breeds, both Shilah and I both had no problem snacking on them to keep our energy up on our walk.

5 Tips for Keeping Your Pet Fit and Trim

Ammo the Dachshund Studio Photos

After my vet gave me a thumbs up last week for keeping myself in tip top shape I thought it would be the perfect time to share some of my tips for keeping trim. And just in time for Thanksgiving too!

Ammo's Annual Vet Visit // Ammo the Dachshund

The ideal weight for a dog can be determined by being able to feel the ribs slightly, having an abdomen that is tucked when viewed from the side, and a visible waist behind the ribs when viewed from the top.

Tips for Keeping your Pet Trim // Ammo the Dachshund

My ideal weight for my size is around 18 pounds, and at my most recent check-up my vet could feel my ribs and I have a visible waist as seen from the photo above. It’s not easy keeping weight down (especially when you love to eat like I do), but hopefully with some of my tips you’ll be on your way to keeping your pet at a healthy weight for them!

Tip 1: Keep Active

Now I’m the first to admit that I don’t actually go on a daily walk everyday, but that doesn’t mean I’m not active!

Ammo on the Farm

I visit the family farm about 4 days a week – where I run my heart out! I enjoy running from groundhog hole to groundhog hole and I’m never in one place for very long. This sort of mental and physical stimulation help keeps me in shape.

Shop Dog // Work // Ammo the Dachshund

5 days a week I work at mom’s shop, and while it may not be an intense workout, just being active and greeting customers helps keep me on the move. I’m a strong believer that mental stimulation is just as important as physical stimulation to keep your pet fit.

ammo the dachshund at lowes

On the weekends I tend to go on one or two adventures, whether it’s a trip to lowes or a walk on the trail it’s a great way to keep me active.

Tip 2: Feed the Right Amount

Currently I eat two brands of food, Wellness Small Breed and Blue Buffalo Wilderness Small Breed, which I alternate with each bag. Both are grain free dry foods.

Tips for Keeping your Pet Trim // Ammo the Dachshund

Now you’ll notice that on the back of all dog food bags they list recommended feeding amounts:

Tips for Keeping your Pet Trim // Ammo the Dachshund

Tips for Keeping your Pet Trim // Ammo the Dachshund

Based on my ideal weight of 18 lbs both bags recommend that I eat about 1 – 1 1/2 cups of food per day. But you will also notice that both bags note that dogs are individuals and these are just recommendations, and what you should feed your dog might vary from the chart.

In actuality I eat 1/3 a cup twice a day, which is much less than the recommended amount for my weight.

Tips for Keeping your Pet Trim // Ammo the Dachshund

My mom has chosen this amount for me over the years by monitoring my weight and cutting my food back slowly until she found an appropriate amount that was able to keep me at a healthy weight. She watches my waist line closely and always cuts my food back if it starts to look a little less trim.

Tips for Keeping your Pet Trim // Ammo the Dachshund

This amount of food might not look like enough to you, but you have to remember that us dogs keep food in our bellies for a long time. (Evident by the fact that hours upon hours after eating we can still throw up some pretty undigested food….yuck!)

When in doubt about how much you should feed your dog, you should always consult your veterinarian.

Tip 3: Take a Class

Ammo practices Dog Agility on his DIY Agility Jumps 2012

Typically once a week I take a dog agility class at my local training center. This helps keep me fit and keeps me thinking and learning too!

Taking any sort of class, even just a basic obedience class, is a great way to keep your dog active. Not just for puppies, any dog, any age, can benefit from training classes!

Tip 4: Use Treats Sparingly

Kong Premium Treats Product Review & Giveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

I review a lot of treats on the blog, but that doesn’t mean that I’m allowed to have them whenever I want. Mom keeps a tight watch on the cookie jar and I’m only allowed to have small treats when we are training.

I also try to keep most of the treats I eat on the healthy end of the scale, like eating sweet potato treats.

Tip 5: Limit Table Scraps

dachshund food

As a general rule I’m not allowed to have table scraps (although that doesn’t stop me from trying). The only exception to this rule is when mom will let me have bits of apple and carrots when she’s cutting them up. But for the most part it’s best for me just to eat the food that was designed for dogs.

So I hope you enjoyed my tips for keeping your pet fit and trim! Here’s to hoping we all live long and healthy lives!Ammo the Dachshund

Disclosure: This is supposed to be a general guide on how I keep myself fit, but you may need to consult your veterinarian as to what and how much to feed & exercise your own pet. Each pet is different!

I do it for the Cookies

It’s no secret that I’m no stranger to being in front of the camera lens. And frequently I’m asked how my mom gets me to pose so well for a photo – and honestly, it’s quite simple…

….COOKIES!

Recently I got the opportunity to test out some True Chews Premium Jerky Treats from my friends at Chewy.com.

Product Review: True Chews Premium Jerky from Chewy.com // Ammo the Dachshund

I was super excited to dive into that bag of jerky, but then I thought to myself… “self, you should let your best friend Trooper try out these Jerky treats”…. especially since mom says jerky gives me the toots, as in room clearing toots! Which honestly I don’t understand what the big deal is anyway, but I decided to hand over the product testing to my good pal just because I like him so much.

So when I told Trooper that he got to be the one to test out the Premium Jerky Cuts, his eyes got real big and he started to drool!

I mean just look how big and juicy those jerky slabs are!

Trooper’s eyes glazed over as he dug into that soft meat, and I admit, I started to regret letting him try them instead of keeping them all to myself.

Tonight We Dine!

As the weather gets even warmer I look forward to more nights out on the town with my mom and dad. Being a small dog means I can easily be taken lots of places, and outdoor dining is no exception.

Wilderness Trail Treats Review

Last week my friends over at Mr. Chewy were kind enough to send me over a package of Blue Buffalo Wilderness Trail Treats in Chicken Jerky to try. Now honestly, who would pass up the opportunity to eat treats….no one I tell you, no one.

Ammo the Dachshund // Blue Buffalo Wilderness Trail Treats Review // Mr. Chewy

I must admit, I’m already a fan of the Blue Buffalo brand, in fact I currently eat their small breed dry dog food, but I have never tried their Wilderness Trail Treats.

Ammo the Dachshund // Blue Buffalo Wilderness Trail Treats Review // Mr. Chewy

I was certainly intrigued by the “wilderness” part of it, and I pictured myself lurking in the wild in search of my dinner just like the lone wolf on the package. But just to be clear I do not want to be dropped off in the woods to fend for myself – I like my dog bed and heat lamp, and prefer my food to come pre-packaged, just fyi!

So after the obligatory “pose with package” photos mom made me take, I was more than ready to test them out.

Blue Buffalo’s Wilderness Trail Treats are grain free and made with no by-products or artificial anything, which means it’s practically like eating chicken….right off the chicken!

As I gnawed on my pieces of chicken jerky I couldn’t help by channel my inner wolf – although in my case I was gnawing on imaginary ground-hog (those sneaky critters).

Birthday Week: Dog Treat Round-up

I couldn’t decide what I wanted mom to bake me for my Birthday, so I decided to round-up some of my favorite dog treat recipes on the web right now.

My paws are crossed that mom will bake me one of these this weekend, because when your Birthday is on a Friday you get to extend it into a Birthday Weekend – it’s a rule!

Low Fat Carrot Dog Treats from Dog Treat Recipes

Ammo the Dachshund // Birthday Week // Carrot and Banana Dog Treat Recipe

Image via 17 Apart

Ingredients:

  • 1 medium banana (ripe)
  • 1 cup shredded carrots
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applejuice
  • 1/8 cup water (maybe more, as needed)
  • 1 1/2 cup whole wheat flour (keep some handy for rolling)
  • 1 cup rolled oats

Ammo the Dachshund // Birthday Week // Carrot and Banana Dog Treat Recipe
Image via 17 Apart

Directions: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees, lightly spraying a baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray and sprinkling a little flour onto the surface you’re planning to use to roll out the dough. In a medium bowl, mash up the banana and mix in the shredded carrots. Then add water and apple juice. Stir. Next, add the oats and flour. Stir all of the ingredients together until they are thoroughly combined.

Using your hands, knead the mixture until a dough forms. Dump the dough onto the lightly floured surface that you prepared earlier. Roll it out until it’s about a half inch thick. Using a cookie cutter, cut into 3″ pieces. Place the pieces onto your lightly sprayed baking sheet. Bake the dog treats for 25 minutes.

Before “serving”, let them cool completely. Here’s a tip that you may find useful: If your dog likes a little more crunch to his treats, then turn off the oven and let the treats cool there overnight.

I don’t know about you, but I’m totally drooling! Ammo the Dachshund

Trip to Wyebrook Farm

Yesterday I took a trip to Wyebrook Farm in Honeybrook, PA.

Ammo the Dachshund visits Wyebrook Farm

I’ve been to many farms before – but mom told me this one was a little bit different.

Ammo the Dachshund visits Wyebrook Farm

From their website:

At Wyebrook Farm, we provide an alternative to the industrial food supply. By creating a diverse polyculture on our farm, we produce the healthiest animals and best food without the use of artificial fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, hormones or antibiotics.

We believe that the only way to guarantee that the food you eat is healthy, safe and nutritious is to know the farmer who produced it. We sell the products of the farm from a historic barn on the farm so that our customers can see our animals and our farming practices. We encourage you to tour the farm and ask us questions. By purchasing food from Wyebrook Farm, you support the local community and ensure that this part of Chester County retains the agricultural character that has made it one of the most productive and beautiful places in America.

Ammo the Dachshund visits Wyebrook Farm

At Wyebrook Farm they have a cafe that is open on the weekends as well as a market that sells their farm raised meats and veggies.

Ammo the Dachshund visits Wyebrook Farm

The food was delicious, but I was really excited to take a tour of the farm.

Ammo the Dachshund visits Wyebrook Farm

I met some really cute chicks along the way.

Ammo the Dachshund visits Wyebrook Farm

I even got to meet this portly fellow – who despite looking somewhat friendly, scared the bejeezes out of me!

Ammo the Dachshund visits Wyebrook Farm

It ended up being a really fun day – and we even stopped for ice cream on the way home! I have no doubt I’ll be back again, and next time I’ll work up the courage to tell that pig who’s boss. Ammo the Dachshund
