It’s come to my attention that I never really properly introduced some of my new friends on the farm. (those two frosty gals behind me).
Now if my friends Etna & Aldis look a bit chilly, not to worry….they actually LOVE the cold because they hail from Iceland!
That’s right, these Icelandic Horses are a unique breed of smallish horses that came to Iceland with the first settlers from Norway 1100 years ago. Archeological digs in Europe have revealed that they are descendent from an ancient breed of horses that is now extinct outside of Iceland, where it has been preserved in isolation.
To be honest, in the beginning I wasn’t really sure they were horses at all with all that wild hair.
But eventually that sassy pony stink eye emerged, and I knew, yup….horses for sure!
One thing is for sure though, it must be pretty nice to not be bothered by the cold! I admit, I’m pretty jealous of their ability to thrive in the cold. At least summer is on it’s way!
