In a Foggy Backyard

Once upon a time in a foggy back yard there was a tiny little dog with great big digging paws.

He found a scent and dug and dug until his hearts content.

With all that snow he could find holes to dig in for days and days!

Oh and what’s that….there’s something there under the snow….

oh yup, that little digging pup found a treasure! Only something tiny little dogs with great big digging paws could uncover. Bunny poop!

And if you want to come over to my foggy back yard I’ll gladly share my digging treasure with all of you! Ammo the Dachshund

Ruffwear Summit Trex Dog Boots Review & Giveaway

Ruffwear Summit Trex Dog Boots Review & GIveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

I’m very excited to be bringing you today’s product review, Ruffwear’s Summit Trex Dog Boots! With the nasty winter we have been dealt here in Pennsylvania I found myself wishing I had something for my paws to keep them more protected and warmer too.

Ruffwear Summit Trex Dog Boots Review & GIveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

Now if you own a dachshund and have ever tried boots on them, then you probably already know that getting a pair of boots to stay on our front digger paws can be a bit difficult. Because our short little legs are constructed so differently from the average dog it can be pretty hard to keep boots from slipping.

Ruffwear Summit Trex Dog Boots Review & GIveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

Initially when I tried out my summit trex boots I had trouble with the front ones slipping off (the back ones stayed on nice and snug since our back paws are more like an average dog’s), but mom had a great idea on how to keep them on.

You might remember that before I got my Ruffwear boots I had been wearing a pair of Pawz Boots. While technically I wouldn’t really consider these boots – as they are made out of what can best be described as a latex balloon type material and don’t really keep your paws any warmer – they proved to be the perfect boot liner!

Ruffwear Summit Trex Dog Boots Review & GIveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

With my Pawz boots underneath my summit trex boots on the front I was running through the snow in no time!

Ruffwear also sells a pair of boot liners that would also work well for keeping these boots on the hard-to-fit dachshunds, but at the moment the smallest size they carry was just a tad too large for me. But not to worry, because they are coming out with smaller sizes later this year….I can’t wait!

Ruffwear Summit Trex Dog Boots Review & GIveaway // Ammo the Dachshund

I tested out my Ruffwear boots all over the farm and in the snow and ice! These boots are designed to provide everyday traction and paw protection from extreme temperatures, abrasive surfaces, and salt or other snowmelt chemicals.

The Summit Trex boots come in lots of sizes, and you can even order them as singles to make sure they fit your dog perfectly. I’m wearing 1.75 inch boots on my front paws and 1.5 inch boots on my back paws – to insure a snug fit it’s best to make sure you measure your dog’s paws properly, which is simple with Ruffwear’s sizing video.

Now I wasn’t the only one that got to try out a pair of Ruffwear boots, my pal Trooper got to test out a pair of Grip Trex boots for his paws.

These Grip Trex dog boots are great for dogs who hike, bike, run, or explore the great outdoors with their humans. As you can see they are set a little lower on the ankle, and would be a great pair of boots for the bigger dogs since they come in larger sizes.

Trooper and I were glad to have some boots to keep our paws protected this winter, but it took us a little bit to get used to wearing something on our feet, just check out this hilarious video of our first time wearing them…

And incase you’re wondering, it didn’t take us long to get the hang of running around outside in them (especially after mom tossed us a whole bunch of cookies) and before long we didn’t even notice we were wearing them!

And now for the best part…

Throwback Thursday: A Dog and his Kitten

spider the kitten

My cat pal Spider has been living on the farm for several years now and over the years I have gotten to watch her grow into the cat that she is today – all thanks to me. It’s true, when she was just a wee little kitten I taught her all of the important things to know….

Like how to chew on sticks….

and climb trees….

Without me she would be lost! Ammo the Dachshund

Dog Agility Training – the off days

As you may already know I have been taking agility training classes for a long time now. I have yet to ever compete, and someday I might, but mostly I just enjoy the exercise and mental stimulation.

Ammo the Dachshund // Dog Agility

However, despite my love of running the courses, sometimes I have off days too. For example last week I was a little off my game. Having just been to the vet for a nail trim (sort of stressful for me) and having to wait extra long in my crate for my turn on the course (stressful as well when you aren’t a huge fan of the crate), I had pretty much worn myself out from worrying by the time it was my turn to run the course.

I tried my best, but I was just a bit distracted (hence why I missed a few obstacles and did some very poorly executed weave poles) and much much slower on the course than normal. But hey, we’re all allowed to have off days – perhaps next week at class I’ll have a little more pep in my step! Ammo the Dachshund

Big Blizzard

2014 Blizzard with Ammo the Dachshund

Last Thursday when I awoke there was a whole lot of snow outside my door. As in 15+ inches of fluffy white stuff!

2014 Blizzard with Ammo the Dachshund

Of course the first thing I did was pile on my jackets and head outdoors to catch some snowflakes!

Running like a crazy dog through the snow was totally worth being chilly for just a few minutes. So fun in fact, that I headed out to the farm for some more winter adventures with my ponies!

Even the ponies had fun in the snow!

Despite the inches upon inches of snow we received (and keep continuing to receive), I just can’t get on board with “snow bashing”. It might be cold and wet, difficult for mom and dad to shovel, and somewhat of a hazard – but when else do you get to make memories like these? Snowday fun is just the kind of adventures I needed this winter!

How about you, do you enjoy snow day adventures as much as me?

Throwback Thursday: Blizzard with a Dachshund

Ammo the Dachshund // Snowday

While this year it seems the winter storms have come in full force to my area, for the past couple of years we haven’t really had any record snowfall. In fact, the last time we had big blizzards like this I was just a wee pup. So today for Throwback Thursday I thought it would be fun to take a look back at some old snow videos circa 2009!

As you can see I loved the snow even when I was a pup – it makes for the best tunneling and digging adventures!

Ice Storm in the Dark

Ice Storm in Pennsylvania // Ammo the Dachshund

As my Facebook fans already know, last week a big ice storm hit my hometown just a few days after we received about 10 inches of snow.

Ice Storm in Pennsylvania // Ammo the Dachshund

As beautiful as the ice was it didn’t take long for it to coat the already snow covered trees and power lines which pretty much meant it was lights out for most of my area!

Ice Storm in Pennsylvania // Ammo the Dachshund

My backyard started to look like something out of a Dr. Suess book!

Ice Storm in Pennsylvania // Ammo the Dachshund

I spent most of the first day we didn’t have power snuggled up in bed.

Ice Storm in Pennsylvania // Ammo the Dachshund

But without a generator or a fireplace my layer of sweaters began to pile higher and higher. So along with most of the people on my street I packed up and left home in search of somewhere warm to stay.

Ice Storm in Pennsylvania // Ammo the Dachshund

But don’t worry, it didn’t take long for me to find a warm place to snuggle up in. Thankfully my mom mom and pop pop had a whole house generator which made for some nice and toasty napping spots.

Ice Storm in Pennsylvania // Ammo the Dachshund

I even spent some time over at my other grandparent’s house and soaked up a little warmth in front of Trooper’s wood stove. (Don’t tell him, but I also chewed a hole in a few of his toys too when he wasn’t looking).

Ice Storm in Pennsylvania // Ammo the Dachshund

Despite living out of a suitcase for 4 days, it seemed like I was on an exciting overnight trip where I got to visit extra long with the people I care about! Thanks to everyone who gave me a place to stay!

But thankfully with the help of all the linemen in my area (and many from other states that came to help as well) I eventually got to go home to my own bed. While I can’t say I didn’t miss sleeping in my own home – it was definitely an adventure that I won’t forget.

And it looks like my next winter adventure is just around the corner, because we’re supposed to be getting about 12 inches of snow on Thursday! eek!

P.S. For those of you wondering how my ponies made out in the storm, despite all the road closures around the farm due to down wires and poles – the farm only lost power for about a day. Everyone made it through the storm A-ok (those ponies are super tough!).Ammo the Dachshund
